One NHL Insider has come forward to share some additional details about a failed trade between the Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs.
Golden Knights Forward William Karlsson Reportedly Nixed a Trade to the Maple Leafs
According to The Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta, who appeared on ‘The Sheet’ with Jeff Marek on Tuesday, William Karlsson was part of trade discussions between the Leafs and Golden Knights, but ultimately used his trade protection to nix any potential deal.
“They had conversations last summer… My understanding is that William Karlsson was part of the discussion at one point, and he’s got some no-trade protection. I believe that also played a factor in that whole discussion.”
The now 32-year-old is entering year 7 of the 8-year deal he signed in 2019 that includes a modified no-trade clause with a list of 10 teams.
Clearly, the Leafs were on that list if he rejected a trade last off-season. Given the Leafs’ need for a middle-six center and the Knights’ need to shed salary, Karlsson and his $5.9M cap hit would have been the perfect target for Brad Treliving and the Leafs again this off-season, but it would seem they will have to continue to look elsewhere to fill that void up front.
