A Stanley Cup champion forward is about to become available, and some see him as an intriguing target for the Montreal Canadiens.
It was Pierre LeBrun who reported the news. It stems from a trade completed by the Florida Panthers today.
The Florida Panthers acquired 34-year-old forward Garnet Hathaway in a trade, and the move could indirectly have significant implications for Kent Hughes and the Canadiens.Hathaway, who carries a reduced $1.2 million cap hit, is expected to replace A.J. Greer in Florida’s lineup.
So, again according to Pierre LeBrun, Greer is now headed to the free-agent market (because of the trade completed today).
What does this mean for the Montreal Canadiens?
Greer has the kind of profile that could really appeal to the Canadiens, his name has often been linked to the team, and now his availability appears to be confirmed!
Canadiens emerge as logical landing spot for A.J. Greer after Panthers trade
Greer would be an interesting fit for the Canadiens, and everything seems to be lining up for a return to Montreal for the hard-nosed Quebec-born forward.
His time with the Stanley Cup champions only adds to his appeal. Greer helped the Panthers win the Stanley Cup.
A player with that profile could certainly interest Kent Hughes.
With a Stanley Cup-winning forward set to hit free agency, this is exactly the kind of opportunity Kent Hughes could be keeping an eye on as July 1 approaches.
