The NHL offseason is in full swing, and the Boston Bruins welcomed eight new players to the organization yesterday.
They did not make a selection during the first round on Friday, then made seven on the second day of the NHL Draft. Don Sweeney also made two trades, though one involved only draft picks. The other trade? A former first-round pick is on his way out for forward Ivan Ivan.
Day two of the NHL Draft did not provide as many fireworks as day one, but there were still moves.
Brandon Carlo was traded. Again. And the return was a lot less than the price Brad Treliving paid for him. John Carlson, or at least the exclusive negotiating window to sign him, was also traded.
Elliotte Friedman dropped news that the Kings do not plan on extending one of their franchise cornerstones this summer. There is more news on the Dylan Larkin trade front, and the Penguins united the Ruck twins.
The San Jose Sharks also made history in the seventh round yesterday by selecting a 7-foot-1 Moldovan defenseman.
Happy Sunday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
Boston Bruins
DRAFT PICKS: The NHL draft wrapped up yesterday. The Bruins made seven selections yesterday; their first pick (No. 56) was Yuri Ivanov, a Russian goalie. The Bruins drafted both another Russian (first time since 2002) and another goaltender. They also took two Swedish wingers and two defensemen.
Right-shot defensemen were the biggest positional need, and the Bruins did not address it until the seventh round. Ryan Nadeau, director of amateur scouting, said they were committed to their draft board.
IVAN IVAN: The Bruins also made a small move… depending on how you look at it. They traded 2021 first-round pick Fabian Lysell for undrafted forward Ivan Ivan. It did not work out here for Lysell, and after the trade, Don Sweeney said “it’s the right thing to do for him personally, and hopefully professionally.”
Colorado Eagles: Yes. His name is Ivan Ivan. Back in 2024, he said it was because his dad, Marek Ivan, was often asked whether his name was Marek or Ivan. He simply made it easier for his son.
NHL News & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: Brandon Carlo will be reunited with Jim Montgomery next season. He was traded to the St. Louis Blues yesterday for two third-round picks, and they will take on the last year of his contract.
The Bruins retained $615,000 of Carlo’s cap hit in the trade to Toronto at the 2025 deadline. St. Louis is taking on a $3.485 million cap hit.
ESPN: The Hurricanes traded a seventh-round pick and a minor league defenseman for the rights to sign UFA John Carlson. It was not a sign-and-trade, but now the Hurricanes have exclusive negotiating rights with the 36-year-old right-shot defenseman.
The Hurricanes have $11,105,182 in cap space.
Elliotte Friedman (via 𝕏): The LA Kings will not extend defenseman Drew Doughty this offseason. The 36-year-old has spent his entire career in Los Angeles, and the organization wants him to stick around, but Ken Holland is pushing any decision to next summer.
Got a bit lost in everything last night, but LA GM Ken Holland said the Kings will not extend Drew Doughty this summer.
Holland did say the organization wants Doughty to finish his career as a King, but that will likely be dealt with after the 2026-27 season — when the…

Detroit Hockey Now: Steve Yzerman spoke yesterday, and while he did not take any questions on Dylan Larkin’s trade request, he offered a statement. He is not in a hurry to accommodate the trade request, and he is looking to, as is his job, do what is in the best interest of his team. Bob Duff has more on the Larkin trade front.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Ruck twins are together in Pittsburgh. The Penguins used the 22nd-overall pick on Liam and drafted brother Markus at No. 39. They did not have to trade up, though there were credible rumors that teams considered taking Markus to engage Kyle Dubas in trade talks.
San Jose Hockey Now: 7-foot-1. That’s how tall San Jose Sharks seventh-rounder Alexander Karmanov is. The Sharks, who had a loaded draft class, made history with the No. 201 pick. The Moldovan defenseman is the tallest player to be drafted by an NHL team.
Sportsnet: Here is every pick of the 2026 NHL Draft. There were 32 goalies drafted, all yesterday.
