We are back at the hockey rink today for the Pittsburgh Penguins development camp, which begins at 9 a.m. and ends Friday with the intrasquad tournament at noon. On Sunday, we examined what happened during NHL draft week. While many are calling the Penguins’ path forward complicated, we examined the lack of a major Penguins trade, their path forward, and what we learned from it all.

Elsewhere in the Daily, the Vancouver Canucks are reportedly “desperate” to trade Elias Pettersson, but the interested teams are wary. Reporters in Edmonton have fleshed out the three teams on Darnell Nurse’s trade list, and the Penguins are one. Dallas is trying hard to re-sign Jason Robertson, and Columbus has yet another player who doesn’t want to re-sign.

I didn’t do a story on it because I didn’t want to embarrass anyone. Our colleague and SteelersNow photographer Ed Thompson showed up for the Save the Nailers rally at PPG Paints Arena on Sunday, but no fans showed up. It was Ed and the Wheeling TV station.

That’s OK–it’s a long drive, and there are better ways to protest. My gut feeling is that it’s 50/50, not 100%, that the affiliation moves to Florida. Wheeling is too close and too much a part of the Penguins fanbase to discard it and you. If Hockey Ops gets its choice–as evidenced by Dubas’s body language–the affiliation stays in Wheeling.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: No big trades. No big free agents expected. Yep, this is the offseason we predicted, but that GM Kyle Dubas wanted to avoid. So, what comes next, and what is the path forward? Here’s what we learned from the Penguins’ draft week.

No, I won’t be at camp at 9 a.m. to watch the goalies work out, but I will be at the UPMC Lemieux Complex all day. There are some notables not coming this week, but some players of whom you might want to start keeping track. Here is the schedule and the 2026 Penguins Development Camp roster.

NHLtraderumors.me: Thomas Drance of The Athletic and Vancouver radio reports that he spoke with several sources over the last week, and he came to the conclusion that the Vancouver Canucks are “desperately” trying to trade Elias Pettersson, but Pierre LeBrun also reports that teams have shied away because Pettersson isn’t showing signs of life. It won’t be easy to trade him.

To answer the first comment proactively, no, not even with an unprotected first-round pick.

Dallas Morning News: $14 million? Well, they’re talking. The Dallas Stars and Jason Robertson are about $2 million apart on a new contract, and Dallas is not letting teams talk to Robo before a trade. So, what comes next for both?

Boston Hockey Now: The trade landscape has changed for big defenseman Darnell Nurse. Reporters have found the few teams on his trade wishlist, including the Penguins, but the lack of a deal is holding up Edmonton’s offseason. Now, it seems there’s another team on the list–the Boston Bruins.

The Athletic ($): Add one name to free agency, and the team doesn’t care if he’s upset. Mats Zuccarello and the Minnesota Wild won’t come to an agreement, and the 39-year-old Zuccarello is “pissed off.”

Now, an honest question. Does anyone watch the Sunday night sports shows?

They used to be primary viewing for me and many fans, but last night I made a point to do something absolutely silly on WPXI’s Final Word, and it seems like no one noticed. I’m told WPXI has better ratings than KDKA for the Sunday night show, but I’ve tested the waters–I’ve purposefully pushed the envelope a few times and received zero pushback.
