RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – State Labor Commissioner Luke Farley has presented Pope Leo XIV with a Carolina Hurricanes championship jersey and the Order of the Tar Heel award.
The jersey celebrated the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup championship, while the award recognized the pope as the first American to lead the Catholic Church.
A press release says the honor also recognized Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to workers’ rights, including the idea that artificial intelligence should help, not replace employees.
“It was an honor to meet with Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City, where I had the privilege of presenting him with the Order of the Tar Heel as a symbol of North Carolina’s gratitude for his lifelong example of service, faith, and leadership,” said Commissioner Farley. “North Carolina is proud to celebrate the Carolina Hurricanes for bringing the Stanley Cup home, and it was a special honor to present Pope Leo with a Hurricanes championship jersey commemorating this historic achievement.”
