It looks as if Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are in for five years of rebuilding, as Kyle Dubas made a new coaching hire today. That is former Rangers assistant coach Dan Muse.
In a surprising turn of events, Kyle Dubas has hired outside of the typical NHL coaching carousel. NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed the news earlier today.
He had Mitch Love, Gerard Gallant, Luke Richardson, and a laundry list of retreads left, including the infamous John Tortorella.
But instead of making the same mistake as the Flyers, he’s chosen a different path and looks to be pivoting to a rebuild.
The hiring of Dan Muse, after Mike Sullivan’s exit, signals that the team won’t be competing in the playoffs for some time. Which may or may not be a departure point for some Penguins fans who got used to the Sullivan years and multiple Cup runs.
Dan Muse was a New York Rangers assistant coach under Peter Laviolette until his unceremonious exit occurred at the end of the season.
Muse was given a chance to interview with the Sullivan regime in New York, and it’s obvious the two parties weren’t a fit.
And now, Muse has a chance to show what he’s made of in the NHL after having a successful record in USHL (Chicago Steel) and the US NTDP.
Muse won a Championship in the USHL with the Steel in the 2016-2017 season, and would later join the Nashville Predators as an assistant coach during the 2017-2018 season.
Now, he’ll be tasked with a rebuild of a dynasty that has long since fallen, and is trying to shake the rust off.
