Kirby Dach is on the verge of settling his contract future with the Montreal Canadiens.
And by all indications, Kent Hughes is going to come out of it with a very favorable deal.
The 25-year-old forward’s case should be resolved within the next few days. A settlement appears to be on the horizon before an arbitrator even has to make a ruling!
Limited to 37 regular-season games last season, Dach recorded 15 points.
That disappointing season has given the Canadiens valuable leverage at the negotiating table.
The organization submitted a $4 million qualifying offer, but in the form of a two-way contract.
The minimum American Hockey League salary if he is assigned to the minors.
Sportsnet reporter Eric Engels provided details behind the scenes of the negotiations:
Kent Hughes could finalize a discounted one-way contract with Kirby Dach
Even better! Kirby Dach could sign quickly, and at a discount!
Dach would reportedly accept a salary below $4 million in exchange for a one-way contract, which guarantees his full NHL salary even if he is assigned to the Laval Rocket.
That is excellent news and quite a surprising turn of events.
Kent Hughes deserves credit here.
By first submitting a two-way offer, he created leverage without ever closing the door on a reasonable agreement.
Nothing has been signed yet, and a case like this can change quickly. But if Dach trades a little security for a little less money, the general manager will have achieved exactly what he was aiming for.
