Could Klay Thompson be on the move?
Miami is looking to fill out its rotation after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee and is in need of outside shooting. The Heat are also in contention to land LeBron James, but the team is reportedly interested in Thompson whether James returns to Miami or not.
Thompson is in the final year of a three-year deal with Dallas and is owed $17.5 million for the 2026-27 season. The Mavericks don’t necessarily need to move him and any trade would likely be to send Thompson to a contender. The 36-year-old was very candid about his future in Dallas after the Mavericks’ final game of the 2025-26 season.
He does have a family tie to the Heat, as his father Mychal played for Pat Riley’s Lakers teams in the 1980s. Riley has served as Miami’s team president since 1995.
Thompson is fourth on the NBA’s all-time 3-point shooting list with 2,899 threes and 74 3-pointers behind Ray Allen. Last season, he averaged 11.7 points and shot 38.3% from 3-point range last season.
