The Pittsburgh Penguins will open the 2026-27 season on the road against the rival Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in a 7:30 p.m. game that will be broadcast by TNT.

The NHL released all home openers on Wednesday. Teams’ full schedules will be announced on Thursday.

The game against the Flyers will be part of a national broadcast doubleheader, the night after an opening-night triple header.

The Penguins’ home opener will be Tuesday, Oct. 3 against the Montreal Canadiens.

One other game was revealed Wednesday as the Penguins will be the opponent for the Washington Capitals’ home opener on Oct. 7. That rivalry game will feature the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby against Washington’s Alex Ovechkin, who recently opted to return for 2026-27 after flirting with retirement following last season.

It’s not known yet whether there will be any other Penguins games besides those three during the first week of the season.

Opening the season in September is a product of the NHL expanding from 82 to 84 games during the regular season.
