According to a team announcement, the Washington Capitals have signed Oliver Suvanto to an entry-level contract.

The contract will pay the forward at a cap hit of $1.075MM annually in the NHL over three seasons of the deal, and $87,500 in the AHL. Suvanto is expected to be loaned to Tappara of Liiga (Finland-1) for the 2026-27 season, per the press release

The Turku, Finland native was selected in the first round, 18th overall by the Caps in the 2026 NHL Draft. As a 6’3”, 213-pound center, he ranked first among international centers and third among international skaters by NHL Central Scouting. That came from a 2025-26 season in Liiga, where Suvanto’s 11 points were the most by a U17 player in the country’s top league. In his three games spent with the club’s U18 squad, he scored three goals. For Finland, internationally, He also scored two goals in seven games at the 2026 World Juniors, reaching the bronze medal game, and scored three points in five games at the U18s. He was named a top-3 player for Finland at both tournaments.

Suvanto grew into a key player in Finland’s youth ranks as one of the youngest, just 17 years old as an early September birthday in 2008, in the entire 2026 draft class. Known as a big forward that can forecheck and play physical, it sets his NHL-projection with a high floor. Scouts, including those at Elite Prospects, project him as a bottom-six NHL player who can protect the puck well and be a pest in the net-front.

Before his draft season, in 2024-25, Suvanto recorded 42 points in 42 games with Tappara’s U18 team, winning the Esa Peltonen Award as the league’s top forward, a First-Team All-Star bid, and elevated Tappara to a league championship, with 11 points in 13 playoff games. He skipped the U20 level in Finland entirely.

According to his EP Draft Guide profile, he maintained a middle-six role in Liiga, not producing as much as past top prospects, but the trust he gained from his coaching staff was noteworthy in providing a steady game. This presented itself at the World Juniors, where Suvanto provided a majority role on the fourth line as Finland’s defensive-minded center.

If his offense can grow further along with his speed, he’ll be a formidable addition to an NHL lineup when he grows, especially if that team is in the playoffs.

More to come.
