Respected insider David Pagnotta has just revealed an interesting piece of information involving star defenseman Zach Werenski.
The Tampa Bay Lightning came very close to pulling off a blockbuster.
Werenski, one of the NHL’s very best defensemen, was the subject of a legitimate trade offer from the Lightning, and we now even have details about what was included.
The information comes from David Pagnotta during an appearance on Leafs Morning Take.
According to him, the offer included Sam O’Reilly and JJ Moser, along with additional pieces.
Werenski is obviously no ordinary defenseman. The 28-year-old recorded 81 points, including 22 goals, in 75 games last season.
That kind of production puts him among the absolute elite in the league. His $9.58 million cap hit certainly reflects his status as a premier player.
Meanwhile, JJ Moser is a dependable 26-year-old defenseman who posted a +41 rating last season.

Losing Moser would have been a significant blow to the Lightning’s blue line.
He is one of the NHL’s top defensive defensemen while also being capable of contributing offensively.
Since then, the Blue Jackets have, of course, announced that they are no longer willing to entertain offers for Werenski, but I truly believe they are only postponing the issue until a later date.

The general manager built his reputation on bold trades, and you can be sure he will be ready to pick up the phone again if Werenski becomes available.
We’ll continue to monitor this situation closely, but for now, the Blue Jackets appear to have simply put a bandage on the Zach Werenski situation, as the 2026 Norris Trophy winner.
