The New York Rangers are hiring former players Jonathan Quick and Derick Brassard to front-office roles in player development, a league source told The Athletic.
According to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the moves have not been announced, Quick will work as director of goaltending development and Brassard as a player development assistant. Both will report to new director of player development Tanner Glass, another ex-Rangers player who took over atop the department in early May.
The 40-year-old Quick retired after the 2025-26 season as the NHL’s all-time winningest American goalie, amassing 410 victories over 19 seasons. He won three Stanley Cup titles, including two with the Los Angeles Kings in the early 2010s. He spent the final three seasons of his netminding career as the Rangers’ backup to Igor Shesterkin, posting a 35-30-6 record, a 2.94 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage.
Brassard primarily served as the Rangers’ second-line center during his four seasons with New York in the mid 2010s, registering six goals and six assists over 23 playoff games in 2013-14 as the team reached the Stanley Cup Final. A popular figure among Blueshirts fans, he earned the nickname “Big Game Brass” thanks to his postseason heroics. He exited in a July 2016 trade with the Ottawa Senators that brought back Mika Zibanejad, the team’s current top-line center.
The additions of Quick and Brassard come as the Rangers revamp their player development staff under Glass, having parted ways with longtime director Jed Ortmeyer. Prospect growth has remained a steady area of concern for the Rangers, whose spotty record of turning draft picks and young trade acquisitions into NHL mainstays has played a prominent role in the team falling out of contention the last two seasons. Glass had worked under Ortmeyer for the previous seven seasons before receiving his promotion.
Brassard will join yet another former Rangers player, defenseman Marc Staal, as a player development assistant on Glass’ staff. (Antti Miettinen works as the organization’s European player development assistant.) Quick, meanwhile, is filling a new position that was created after the offseason retirement of Benoit Allaire, New York’s director of goaltending.
The hirings of Quick and Brassard are expected to be announced later Tuesday.
