We are in the depths of the NHL offseason, with just 65 days until the Boston Bruins host the New York Rangers on September 29.
It’s Sunday, and Boston Hockey Now’s prospect week has concluded. The Bruins have not made a move since early July, aside from some off-the-ice changes, so we dove into some prospects to keep an eye on, as well as the pipeline of goaltenders the Bruins have in their system.
In other league news, a potential trade is coming out of Columbus. The Blue Jackets are reportedly close to moving forward Kirill Marchenko. The new Devils’ GM had high praise for Jack Hughes, saying his future is not a concern in the Devils’ front office. He cannot speak about Quinn, but the pressure is not on New Jersey in that regard.
There are also more trade rumors, another bad contract, and on-ice villains for the 32 teams around the league.

RG: Yesterday, Daria Tuboltseva reported that the Columbus Blue Jackets are close to trading Kirill Marchenko. A source close to the 25-year-old told RG that the Blue Jackets are finalizing terms of a trade and there are two teams in the mix.
According to the report, Montreal has pursued Marchenko this summer and is believed to be one of the teams involved.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Sunny Mehta seems confident about Jack Hughes’ future in New Jersey. James Nichols spoke to Mehta on Devils Rink Report, and he was full of compliments for the Devils’ star forward.
Colorado Hockey Now: Jacob Trouba’s contract was mentioned the other day, but Brett Kulak’s five-year deal ($4.5M AAV) was also listed as one of the worst contracts in the NHL. The Avalanche acquired Kulak from the Penguins just after the Olympic break before signing him to a five-year extension this summer.
Carolina Hockey Now: The Hurricanes and Alexander Nikishin are still in contract talks. The defenseman wants to be locked up long term with a yearly price tag of $8 million. Rachel Barkley dives into how realistic the move is, and also takes a look at comparable contracts.
NHLTradeRumors.me: Will Arber Xhekaj return to Montreal? The RFA does not have a contract, and trade rumors have started to swirl. David Pagnotta reported that the Flyers are showing interest, joining the Calgary Flames as potential suitors for the 6-foot-4 defenseman.
Dave Litman looked at Rasmus Ristolainen as a potential fit in a trade back to Montreal.
The Athletic ($): Who is the biggest on-ice villain for each of the 32 teams? The Athletic took a look. Ulf Samuelsson is the villain in Boston, while Cam Neely is Montreal’s.
NHL.com: The Ducks signed Nikita Klepov to a three-year entry-level contract yesterday. Klepov was on the Michigan State roster for the 2026-27 season, but is now ineligible to play college hockey.
