At least we are moving closer to hockey season. 

There are 64 days until the Boston Bruins’ home opener and 51 days until training camp opens at Warrior Ice Arena. 

As for the Bruins, it’s not breaking news that Michael DiPietro will assume the backup goalie role this fall. Don Sweeney pointed to him after the July 1 frenzy, just hours after freeing up the role. DiPietro has been with the organization since 2022 and has nothing more to prove in Providence, while the Bruins have seen other goaltenders graduate from the AHL and succeed elsewhere. 

In other league news, “there’s nothing happening” with Kirill Marchenko and the Blue Jackets, despite reports that they were close to moving him out. The Senators are looking to add, and Steve Staios mentioned a “secondary push” that the Sens are keeping an eye on. A KHL team has interest in an unrestricted free agent, but he is still hopeful for a call from an NHL team. 

Also, Detroit’s parting gift from Steve Yzerman, more prospect talk, who the Panthers need to sign next, and standouts from Day 1 of the World Juniors Summer Showcase.

Boston Bruins

DIPIETRO: The Joonas Korpisalo trade freed up the backup role in Boston, and Michael DiPietro has proven himself worthy of a shot at the NHL throughout his time in Providence. DiPietro won the AHL’s best goalie award in each of the last two years and picked up league MVP honors this past season. 

Don Sweeney, as well as goalie coaches Bob Essensa and Mike Dunham, are all confident in the 27-year-old goaltender, and he was “primarily why” Korpisalo was moved.

Aaron Portzline (via 𝕏): Despite reports to the contrary, The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline reported that “there’s nothing happening with CBJ on the Kirill Marchenko front.”

Told there’s nothing happening with #CBJ on the Kirill Marchenko front, despite rumors out of Russia to the contrary.

Not saying it can’t change later this summer. But my understanding is #CBJ have not had calls on Marchenko since earlier this summer.

Ottawa Sun: Last week, Senators GM Steve Staios spoke with TSN 1200 and dove into their roster. They added William Eklund and Andre Burakovsky this summer, but there “could be a secondary push here that we’re going to stay close to,” said Staios. 

NHLTradeRumors.me: UFA Evgenii Dadonov, who had one goal in 24 games with New Jersey last season, has interest from the KHL. The 37-year-old forward is still waiting on an NHL offer, but Traktor Chelyabinsk is interested, and so is Dadonov. 

Detroit Hockey Now: Steve Yzerman’s departing gift was leaving behind a physical hockey team, one that Detroit fans have been craving. They had two players eclipse the 150-hit mark last season, but there are six candidates to hit that mark this year.

Philly Hockey Now: Prospect talk in Philadelphia! The Flyers have a strong pool of prospects, and that does not include Denver Barkey and Alex Bump, who both moved up to the NHL last season. Will James kicks off his prospect rankings by looking at Nos. 10-6. 

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers appear to be set for the summer, and they’re good for a while. They signed two players last week, including Akira Schmid (2x$2M), and they only have two free agents next summer. George Richards takes a look at who the Panthers have to sign next, including a recently acquired forward who is eligible for an extension next summer. 

Daily Faceoff: Steven Ellis has standouts from Day 1 of the World Junior Summer Showcase. Finland beat USA White 4-1, while USA Blue beat Sweden 6-1. 

Cooper Simpson skated on USA Blue’s third line. Will Moore was initially listed on the USA Hockey roster but is not taking part in the Showcase.
