We have an update regarding former Montreal Canadiens forward Patrik Laine.

The New York Islanders have spoken with Patrik Laine’s camp, but they reportedly are not prepared to offer him anything better than a professional tryout.

That is the decision Mathieu Darche and his organization have made regarding Laine.

The information comes from Stefen Rosner, and it says a lot about the Finnish forward’s current value on the market.

According to him, the two sides did indeed speak when free agency opened.

Contact was established, but the Islanders are waiting to see whether Laine will accept a professional tryout.

Rosner also did not mince words about the situation.

“From what I’ve been told, the Islanders did have conversations with Patrik Laine’s camp when free agency opened. I don’t believe the Islanders were willing, or are willing, to offer Laine anything more than a [PTO]”.

A professional tryout, commonly known as a PTO, is an invitation to training camp without a guaranteed contract. The player must earn a roster spot rather than receiving one in advance.

That sends a strong message about Laine’s current market value.

What this setback says about Patrik Laine’s current market value

Seeing a talent like Patrik Laine reduced to settling for nothing more than a professional tryout is striking.

Laine’s shot is still elite, but his market has clearly dried up.

His recurring injuries weigh heavily against him.

Teams are hesitant to guarantee a contract to a player who has struggled to stay healthy over a full season.

His limitations at five-on-five also complicate his situation.

Teams increasingly view him as a power-play specialist rather than a complete player.

The Finnish forward may have to adjust his expectations. Should he accept a tryout somewhere to revive his career, or wait for a more desperate team to take a real chance on his shot?

In any case, we sincerely wish him the very best moving forward.
