Some unfortunate injury news on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman prospect Xavier Villeneuve surfaced on Monday afternoon, as the 2026 second-round pick (No. 34 overall) was ruled unable to participate for Canada at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase.
Villeneuve, 18, was one of four Blackhawks’ recent draft picks set to participate in the Showcase, which began on Sunday in Windsor, Ontario. The announcement came shortly before Canada’s first practice session and two days before its debut against Sweden on Wednesday.

In a post on X that’s since been deleted, The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler said that Villeneuve is still rehabbing from nagging hip injuries that gave him some issues last season, before claiming that “he’s fine”. However, Wheeler removed that post and then provided a follow-up link to an article he published on Jun. 21, five days before the 2026 NHL Draft.

“[Villeneuve] dealt with hip issues this season, which he told The Athletic aren’t major and were “nothing that anybody would operate on,” but that some teams do wonder about and kept him off the ice to start his offseason as he continued his rehab.”
Not enough information is known about the matter, but Wheeler’s initial claim that Villeneuve is continuing his offseason rehab helps ease concerns with the situation. However, it’s still something to be mindful of moving forward. It’s also disappointing he won’t get the chance to flash his talents for Hockey Canada over the next week.
The Blackhawks have three other prospects in attendance at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase — 2025 first-round pick Mason West (USA), 2026 second-round pick Ryan Roobroeck (Canada), and 2026 third-round pick Samu Alalauri (Finland). Roobroeck played wing on a line with Caleb Desnoyers and Chase Harrington during Canada’s practice on Monday.
Villeneuve is bound for college hockey this fall as he transitions from the QMJHL to the NCAA for his freshman season with Boston University, a program the Blackhawks and its fanbase have grown accustomed to in recent years. Alex Vlasic, Ryan Greene, and Drew Commesso each had successful stints with the Terriers before turning professional.
