Under new general manager John Chayka, the club has reshaped key parts of its roster by adding veteran goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, bringing more size and depth to its forward group, making changes on defence and selecting Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Yet the biggest surprise may still be ahead. Fresh trade speculation has connected Toronto with seven-time NHL All-Star Erik Karlsson, a move that would have seemed unlikely only weeks ago but could address one of the team’s most important needs before the new season begins.
Could Erik Karlsson really become the Maple Leafs’ next big addition?
The growing speculation around Karlsson is driven as much by timing as talent. The veteran defenceman is entering the final season of his eight-year, $92 million contract, which carries an annual cap hit of $11.5 million. With unrestricted free agency looming next summer, the Pittsburgh Penguins face a difficult decision. They can extend him, keep him through the season or move him now rather than risk losing him without compensation.An extension does not appear to fit Pittsburgh’s long-term direction. The Penguins are trying to remain competitive while gradually becoming younger, making a lengthy commitment to a 36-year-old defenceman a complicated decision. That has naturally fuelled league-wide speculation over potential landing spots.NHL insider Jimmy Murphy believes two Canadian franchises deserve close attention.“IMHO, Erik Karlsson to the #GoSensGo or #LeafsForever before the 2026-27 season starts,” he said.Toronto is an unexpected name in that conversation, but it is not difficult to understand the hockey logic behind it.Elite right-shot defencemen are among the hardest players to acquire, and Karlsson still offers skills that few players in the league can match. While he is no longer in his prime, his vision, passing and ability to carry the puck through the neutral zone remain elite. Those qualities could help the Maple Leafs transition more cleanly out of their own end while creating quicker attacks for their high-powered forwards.His arrival would also give Toronto another experienced quarterback for the power play, easing some of the offensive burden on the club’s existing blue line.The financial side, however, remains the biggest hurdle.Karlsson’s full cap hit sits at $11.5 million, although the San Jose Sharks already retain $1.5 million annually as part of the original trade. That leaves Pittsburgh responsible for $10 million. If the Penguins agreed to retain half of that amount in another trade, Karlsson would count only $5 million against the acquiring team’s salary cap. Such a structure would make the deal far more manageable for Toronto, though Pittsburgh would almost certainly demand stronger compensation in return for absorbing part of the contract.For the Maple Leafs, the appeal is clear. A one-year addition of an accomplished offensive defenceman could strengthen a roster already built to compete immediately. Whether Pittsburgh decides retaining salary is worthwhile may ultimately determine if this surprising rumour develops into one of the biggest trades before the 2026-27 season begins.
