After spending 14 seasons with the Canadiens, the veteran will try to bring his experience and leadership to the team he cheered for as a child.
That said, seeing him projected on the Canucks’ fourth line, according to NHL.com, says a lot about where he is at this stage of his career.
At 34, Gallagher is no longer the player he once was. His role has changed over the years, as it does for every veteran, and he’ll clearly have to accept that.
His value now lies elsewhere.
His intensity, work ethic, physical play and ability to set an example for younger players are what he can bring to a young team like Vancouver today.

The Canucks will be able to rely on a veteran who can steady their bottom six and apply pressure on the forecheck.
The organization is in the middle of a rebuild.
Leaning on experienced players to guide a young core is exactly the kind of assignment that suits Gallagher, especially since he cost the Canucks nothing to acquire.
It’s also worth remembering that summer projections only mean so much.
A strong training camp, a few injuries or solid performances can change everything quickly. Still, this sets the tone and is already generating plenty of reaction.
Gallagher could climb the depth chart as early as the fall.
Nothing is set in stone before the season has even started.
