Kirby Dach has entered the Kirill Marchenko trade discussion, creating a major roster question for Martin St-Louis and the Montreal Canadiens.
That distinction matters. This is not confirmation that Kent Hughes has placed Dach on the trade block or that Columbus has demanded him in negotiations.
It is a projection of what the Canadiens may need to surrender if they seriously pursue a young winger with top-six value.
Dach would not carry the package by himself. Montreal would likely need to attach another meaningful asset before Columbus considered moving Marchenko.
That could force Hughes to weigh Dach’s upside against the cost of adding draft capital or one of the organization’s better prospects.

Dach remains an intriguing trade chip because his combination of size, skill and center experience is difficult to find. His injury history also makes his value harder to measure.
The Canadiens know what he can bring when he is healthy and engaged. He can protect the puck, create through the middle and give St-Louis another option in the top six.
But availability has shaped his time in Montreal. That uncertainty would affect how the Blue Jackets evaluate him and how much more they would ask Hughes to include.
Marchenko would address a different need. He would give Montreal another natural scoring threat on the wing and add more pressure around the opposing crease.
That is why the proposed package matters more than Dach’s name alone. The real decision is whether Montreal should move several assets for one established offensive piece.
Recent speculation had created the impression that a Marchenko trade could move quickly. The tone around the situation has since cooled, leaving no clear sign that a deal is close.
Hughes does not need to force the issue. But if Columbus opens the door, Dach may be one of the first names discussed before the two clubs turn to picks and prospects.
