Entering the 2025-26 season, goaltending was one of the biggest questions around the Philadelphia Flyers and their roster. Sam Ersson never took the next step forward, and they landed on Dan Vladar, a player who had been a career backup, to split the job with Ersson.

It did not take long for Vladar to steal the net and assert himself as the team’s top goalie. Eventually, Vladar emerged as not only the Flyers’ top goalie, but one of the best in the league last season.

His 52 regular-season games played smashed his previous career total. Still, the baby workload was not enough to stop him from a .908 SV% and a 2.42 GAA, both career highs. Vladar was among the best goalies in the league last season. He turned what was an area of weakness for the Flyers into a strength.

But this is not just about him. Before the 2026 NHL Draft, the Flyers acquired goalie Joseph Woll from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The addition of Woll will make the Flyers’ goaltending tandem a great area of strength in the coming season.

Flyers Goalie Tandem is a Strength of the Roster

The Flyers got great goaltending in the previous season from Vladar, but aside from a great stretch down the road for Ersson, he did not have a great season. That eventually led to his departure, and the Flyers needed a new backup to Vladar.

Joseph Woll has the ability to start for a handful of NHL clubs now. After a down year with the Leafs, posting a career-low .899 SV% and a worst 3.34 GAA, Woll needed a new start. Just a season before that, Woll had a .909 SV% and a 2.74 GAA in 42 games. Before that, a .907 SV% and 2.94 GAA in 25 games.

If Woll can return to his form from the seasons in the past, the Flyers tandem could be legitimately scary.

Woll can be a No. 2 goalie that can help take some of the workload off Vladar’s plate, but can also give the Flyers confidence while doing so.

One reason to believe that he can find that form is the shots taken. Yes, Woll had a 3.34 GAA last season, but he faced 1220 shots, just 63 fewer than Vladar, who played in 13 more games.

If the Flyers defense can help limit the number of shots that get to Woll, his numbers could return to form.
