The San Jose Sharks have locked up their young superstar this morning. They have announced a contract extension with Macklin Celebrini, as he’s extended for five seasons worth $94 million, carrying an $18.8 million AAV. That deal will make him the highest-paid player in the National Hockey League when it kicks in. The deal begins in 2027-28, which means he’ll be a Shark until the end of the 2031-32 season. When the contract ends, he’ll be 26 years old, which will likely include another big contract, presumably with the Sharks. This past season was Celebrini’s second season with the Sharks, and he finished with 115 points. He had 45 goals and 70 assists. Celebrini was a plus-eight with eight power-play goals and five game-winning goals. He finished fourth in the league in points, tied for fourth in goals, and seventh in assists. He finished fourth in Hart Trophy voting.

The Sharks drafted Celebrini first overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. In his rookie season, he played in 70 games, recording 63 points on 25 goals and 38 assists. He was a -31 with eight power-play goals and four game-winning goals. He finished third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting. Before the Sharks, he spent one season at Boston University, where in 38 games he had 64 points on 32 goals and 32 assists; he was a +25.
