The Columbus Blue Jackets are saying goodbye to another longtime figure after team insider Jeff Svoboda announced his departure following eight NHL seasons with the organization.
Svoboda shared the news in a heartfelt message on X, confirming that his role as Jackets Insider ends this week. He reflected on a journey that grew far beyond his original expectations.
“After eight seasons with the Blue Jackets, the time has come to turn the page,” Svoboda wrote. “As of the end of this week, my time as Jackets Insider has come to a close.”
He added, “I never could have anticipated what an incredible experience it would be to tell the story of this organization on a daily basis.”

Svoboda also thanked players, coaches, management, coworkers and fans for their support. “The true thank you goes to the CBJ fan base. It has been a true gift to become part of the hockey community here,” he said.
Svoboda’s exit comes shortly after the Blue Jackets confirmed they would simulcast television and radio broadcasts beginning with the 2026-27 season. That decision ended Bob McElligott’s 17-year run as the club’s radio play-by-play voice after his contract was not renewed.

The latest departure immediately drew reactions across the hockey community. The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline wrote, “Another tough loss for #CBJ. Bodes was a tireless worker and a big part, for many, of the fan experience.”
Blue Jackets writer Mark Scheig added, “Tough way to start a Monday. Jeff is simply the best. One of the kindest people I’ve ever met.”
Many fans also questioned the organization’s direction.
One supporter wrote, “Columbus Blue Jackets management continues to p–s on their fans every chance they get this offseason. Mike Priest should be the one losing his job, not all these lifers.”
Another added, “You’re the best! …The Jackets social media team will be worse for losing your talent.”
A third fan wrote, “Best of luck, Jeff. Thanks for everything. Can only hope this was mutual… Otherwise, yet another incredibly disappointing move this organization has made.”
Front-office and media changes rarely affect results on the ice. However, they can shape how supporters connect with a franchise. Svoboda became a trusted storyteller who helped bridge the gap between the team and its fan base through years of rebuilding.

Columbus is already trying to move forward after missing the playoffs for a sixth straight season. The team also spent the offseason addressing speculation surrounding Zach Werenski and Kirill Marchenko. Losing respected voices like Svoboda and McElligott within weeks of each other leaves many fans feeling the organization has lost another important part of its identity heading into the new season.
