There’s a major development involving Montreal Canadiens prospect Michael Hage.
A sudden change in Alexander Hage’s plans could speed up his brother Michael’s path to Montreal.
Michael Hage’s decision to return to Michigan for a third season surprised plenty of people.
Two factors drove that choice.
The first was development.
The young center wanted more time to round out his game, handle major minutes, and prepare for the jump to pro hockey.
Michael expected to spend the season with his younger brother Alexander, who was set to begin his freshman year with the Wolverines this fall.
That plan has now fallen apart.
Alexander is expected to continue his development in the OHL instead of joining the University of Michigan next season.
Michael Hage’s brother has reversed course and will not play NCAA hockey with Michigan.
That matters because one of the strongest reasons behind Michael’s return to school is no longer part of the equation.
The situation has shifted.
Alexander Hage’s decision opens the door for Montreal
JD Lagrange of The Sick Podcast provided more details on the situation.
“Additional information came in yesterday indicating that Alexander is very likely to return for one more season with the Niagara IceDogs.”
That doesn’t mean Michael will immediately reconsider his decision.
He may still want another college season before turning pro, but the circumstances around that choice have clearly changed.
The Canadiens may now have a stronger opportunity to convince him to sign his entry-level contract before next season begins.
Montreal could also have room for him in its top six, especially if the front office doesn’t add another forward before training camp.
Kent Hughes will be watching this situation closely in the coming weeks.
Could Michael Hage now reconsider his own plans?
