In the shadows of the MLB trade deadline sits the NHL offseason, and while big names moved in baseball (welcome to Boston, Adley Rutschman), it’s been quiet on the hockey front. 

The second assistant general manager to leave the Boston Bruins this summer landed on Long Island, as expected. Evan Gold will be the fourth assistant GM on Long Island, but will also take the reins of the AHL’s Hamilton Hammers. Also in Bruins news, a look back at the roster turnover from just a few seasons ago, and a report on the Bruins’ seventh-round pick. 

Elsewhere around the league, there’s some interest in Wi-Fi. The Flames are reportedly in the mix for the Canadiens’ RFA, joining the Flyers as potential suitors. There are also free agency grades, more roster turnover, Dylan Larkin talk, an early outlook on the 2027 offseason in New York, and prospect spotlights in both Colorado and Philadelphia.

Boston Bruins

2022-23 BRUINS: Where are they now? Only six players remain from the 65-win team from 2022-23, and one of them came back this summer. We took a look at where they all ended up, including some of the players we only saw for a couple of games. 

EVAN GOLD: Yesterday morning, the New York Islanders hired Evan Gold, confirming earlier reports. The former AGM in Boston departed the organization in July, effective August 1, to pursue other opportunities. It did not take him long to land on Mathieu Darche’s staff on Long Island. 

Gold is not the only AGM to go this summer, as Jamie Langenbrunner departed for Nashville. 

Ryan Sikes (via 𝕏): Seventh-round pick Cullen McCrate is reportedly set to play for the Brantford Bulldogs next season. McCrate is committed to Michigan State for the 2027-28 season. 

Hearing that Michigan State commit and Boston Bruins draft pick Cullen McCrate will play for the Brantford Bulldogs in the OHL for the 2026-27 season.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

NHLTradeRumors.me: There’s a new team interested in Arber Xhekaj. The RFA defenseman does not have a contract and avoided arbitration, and teams have called Montreal. The Flyers are interested, and you can add the Calgary Flames to the mix as well. 

Sportsnet: Sportsnet’s Emily Sadler hands out offseason grades to the eight teams in the Metropolitan Division. The Rangers picked up Joonas Korpisalo among some other, more notable, moves, and the Devils brought ex-Bruin Jesper Boqvist back to town. 

New Jersey Hockey Now: Sunny Mehta was smarter than blowing up the Devils roster. James Nichols looks at the Devils’ roster makeover, and how the first-time GM leaned into what already worked. He moved out players with large negative value while bringing in help up front and cheaper depth on the blueline. 

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: There have been 29 players who dressed for the 2024-25 Penguins and are no longer with the organization. Dan Kingerski dove into how they’ve fared, who succeeded, and who flopped, including some former Bruins, like Matt Grzelcyk and Danton Heinen. 

Detroit Hockey Now: Dylan Larkin to Minnesota? It’s a popular bet on some markets, but it’s a lot easier said than done. The Wild and Red Wings have not found common ground. Kevin Allen takes a look at where that may be, as well as another issue with Minnesota as a potential trade partner. 

Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers are slated to have nearly $36 million in cap space next summer. They have two key RFAs, Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle, who are both due for raises, but they also need to decide long-term or bridge. Jim Cerny looks at an early outlook for New York, including a pending decision on Braden Schneider.

Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche have a pretty stable goaltending tandem, but a prospect may complicate that soon. Ilya Nabokov has established himself as a top young goaltender in the KHL, and he’s on his way to Colorado to compete for a job in the AHL. Aarif Deen is looking at some of the Avalanche storylines, and one of them is whether Nabokov will get his chance.

Philly Hockey Now: Prediction time! The Flyers have some young guns, and two players ready to step into their first year in the NHL. Will James predicts how the 2026-27 season will look for both Denver Barkey and Alex Bump.
