The Blue Jackets have reportedly made their decision regarding Kirill Marchenko, according to Columbus reporter Aaron Portzline.

Marchenko is now expected to remain with the Blue Jackets this season.

That update cools the excitement among Montreal Canadiens fans, and especially among certain reporters.

Portzline, who is close to the Blue Jackets’ front office, delivered a clear message about the club’s short-term plans.

He doesn’t expect Columbus to make an immediate move involving Marchenko.

“I don’t think they’re gonna do anything right now, I think the expectation is that he’ll be here this season,” he said.

That certainly dampens hopes in Montreal.

Marchenko’s name had been heavily linked to the Canadiens, but Columbus doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to trade him.

Several recent reports had pointed to an imminent deal… But so much for that!

Blue Jackets keep Kirill Marchenko as Canadiens’ trade opportunity shifts to next summer

This situation could now be pushed back until next summer.

All signs point to Marchenko wanting to wait until July 1 before signing anything, which carries plenty of risk for Columbus. Still, it looks like the Blue Jackets have made their choice.

That doesn’t close the door over the long term. A player who refuses to sign an extension often forces his team’s hand sooner or later, but this remains a surprising decision from the Blue Jackets.

Don Waddell appears determined to keep his winger.

Kent Hughes will need to look elsewhere to address Montreal’s short-term needs.
