The next couple of weeks are the worst of the calendar year for coming up with Pittsburgh Penguins stories, and keeping enough NHL content for a Daily, but we’re working through it all because, well, I owe you. We had a good talk with what I could term the Penguins’ mystery prospect, Tanner Howe. We also did a little digging on the Penguins’ history of waiver wire pickups and the success they’ve had. And there is some NHL trade chatter still percolating, especially in Anaheim as they desperately need to clear cap space.

Elsewhere in the Daily, JFresh did a few-minute clip of highlights of Mario Lemieux’s last game, and it was a beaut as Mario played on a line with an 18-year-old Sidney Crosby and soon-to-be departed Ziggy Palffy. TSN studied aging goalies to set proper expectations, and there is growing momentum for an unconventional candidate in the Detroit Red Wings GM search.

This is entirely off the beaten path, but with the lack of anything I’m enjoying on TV (just as I was ready to re-invite the Pirates into my life, they tanked…as usual), I’ve been watching way too many Facebook/Instagram reels. They’re now a few minutes long, and I was today years old when I found out there was hate on the Golden Girls set.

Even Gen Alpha has seen The Golden Girls, right? I never knew Bea Arthur hated…HATED…Betty White. Seriously, how could anyone hate Betty White? Arthur hated White’s humor and her joking with the audience between takes. So, the moral of today is, no matter how friendly, funny, or good you are, there will always be a hater.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: I’m going to start putting more things behind the paywall again, as I’ve been told there have been fixes to our issues. But I wanted to keep this free so more of you are introduced to Tanner Howe, the Penguins’ great unknown prospect. We talked with Howe just a couple of days ago about the struggles, his health, his game, and even how to pick fights. Check out our chat with the Penguins prospect.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

NHL.com: The Anaheim Ducks’ cap situation isn’t good. They have about $10 million to spend (after demoting a goalie), but Cutter Gauthier wants a lot more than that, especially after Leo Carlsson got paid with an armored truck earlier this summer. The trade chatter has been quiet, but something has to give and soon for Anaheim.

NHLtraderumors.me: Our boys in Detroit have floated his name, as well. Now, Elliotte Friedman reports that Jeff Greenberg, who has been working on the baseball side with the Detroit Tigers after a few years with the Chicago Blackhawks, is a serious contender for the Red Wings GM gig.

TSN: Older goalies. Can they recapture what was? The numbers say no, so what does the analysis show that teams can expect from Sergei Bobrovsky and Frederick Andersen this season, as both are in their mid-30s?

Philly Hockey Now: In addition to not winning a Stanley Cup in my lifetime, the Philadelphia Flyers have never had a Calder Trophy winner. Will James writes–that could change because of one player many of you liked at the draft, and even in the playoffs, Porter Martone.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Since one goalie didn’t work, try three? It could work. It might work, maybe. That seems to be the thinking as the New Jersey Devils have stockpiled goalies.

And JFresh posted a slice of heaven on X. Just because. Mario Lemieux, with a bad ticker and 40 years old, still controlled the game. Here are several of his shifts in his final game. His linemates were Sidney Crosby and Ziggy Palffy. Just … wow.
