Like George Costanza, the Pittsburgh Penguins have worlds colliding. PHN took a critical look at the youth movement against the veteran clog in the context of the Penguins’ offseason. Elsewhere in the Daily, the NHL rumor mill has the KHL making some noise and expressing interest in a few of the unsigned NHL free agents. The next Detroit GM has a mess to clean up. The New York Islanders released their final eight potential alternate sweaters, created by fans, for fans to vote for a winner. And most of them are uglier than a David Volek slapshot.

Thanks for sticking around. I know August isn’t exactly fertile ground for hockey, and some of you absolutely despise the personal asides (not gonna stop me though), but we’re putting in the extra work to scour the landscape for interesting stories to include. I swear I’m taking a day or three off someday, but the rain just isn’t helping. Missing the Perseid meteor shower this year pretty well stinks.

With any luck, I’ll be able to squeeze in another trip to the Royal Inn, which is owned by Denny Heindl, for prime rib. Seriously, I can still taste that prime rib and garlic butter from last month’s visit.

And if you find any small towns with restaurants and a hotel—as motorcycle Fraser says—I’m listening.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is divided, building a youthful foundation but also signing veterans. In our 3 Penguins Thoughts, we dissected the potential number of seven-figure salaries in Wilkes-Barre and the feasibility of a big-name Penguins trade.

And the boys on Spittin Chiclets discussed the Ville Koivunen contract, kind of. They had no idea who Koivunen was, but they did get to the heart of the matter:

NHL Rumors, News, & NHN

NHLtraderumors.me: The Russians are making some noise. Now that a few players are a few weeks away from camp and don’t have contracts, the KHL’s Ak Bars Kazan has expressed interest in a few players, including Evander Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko.

Sportsnet: There are 10 teams without a captain, which seems like an extraordinarily high number. The Canadian folks looked at each team—who should wear the C for those teams.

Ottawa Citizen: Remember the news about a new building for the Ottawa Senators? They’re still moving forward, but people are asking about tangible progress a year later. The team’s ownership says it’s going well, but all the news is behind the scenes.

If I’m still doing this when the Sens get their new barn, I will miss my short stays at the Super 8 in Brockville and dinner at the 1000 Islands Brewery.

Edmonton Journal: A crazy summer in Edmonton is coming to a close, but the chatter is still warm. Why didn’t the McDavid-Draisaitl nuclear option work well last year? Will Babcock figure out the goaltending mess, RNH, and can Babcock build a legit top six without stacking the top line?

NHL.com: A couple, I like. Most, no, and hell no. The New York Islanders announced the eight finalists for their third jersey. Now fans get to vote.

Even if you hate the Isles, for the love of all that is holy, skip the Gorton’s Fisherman sweaters.

Boston Hockey Now: It always feels a little bit odd when discussing an active player’s Hall of Fame credentials, but I also understand it. The folks in Boston have a pretty good player they want to see on that stage one day. Is David Pastrnak HoF worthy?

Detroit Hockey Now: Underscoring more bad decisions by Steve Yzerman and the relative weakness of last year’s Detroit Red Wings, several of their veteran players remain without contracts this summer. What gives for the former Red Wings?
