The Boston Bruins have not made a player move since re-signing Riley Duran on July 9, over a month ago, and the only other changes have been to the front office and the Providence Bruins’ bench. It’s August, things are quiet, and the countdown is down to 48 days.
For the third straight year, The Athletic took a look at the active players who could someday land in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Of the 50, one is an active Bruin, while one spent the first 16 seasons in Boston.
John Farinacci, who joined the Bruins after three years at Harvard, signed with Milwaukee on an AHL deal yesterday.
Elsewhere around the league, the New York Islanders narrowed their alternate jersey options down to eight, and their fans were quick to voice their disappointment. There’s talk surrounding free agent Patrik Laine, another Atlantic Division offseason grade, a Czech prospect signing with the Canucks, more about the Sebastian Cossa trade, a look at the top RFAs still on the market, and some thoughts on the Penguins, including Justin Brazeau’s spot in the lineup.
Happy Wednesday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
Boston Bruins
PASTRNAK: The Athletic looked at which players could someday land in the Hockey Hall of Fame. David Pastrnak made the cut, falling in the “On track” tier. He’s 67 points away from 1,000 through 12 seasons, and those numbers are hard to ignore, but another individual award, or the Stanley Cup, will go a long way.
Brad Marchand was also on the list. The former captain is one of seven veterans in the “Keep compiling” tier.
The Athletic: Here is the full list from Peter Baugh and Max Bultman of The Athletic.
NHL (via YouTube): Ahh, the bubble. Remember the 11:00 AM game? That was six years ago today, and (speaking of the Hall of Fame) Patrice Bergeron gave the Bruins a 1-0 series lead over Carolina at the 1:13 mark of 2OT.
Milwaukee Admirals (via 𝕏): John Farinacci signed a one-year AHL deal with the Milwaukee Admirals (NSH). Farinacci scored in the lone NHL game he played, coming at the very end of the 2024-25 season. In 195 games with Providence, he finished with 95 points (31-64–95) and added four more (2-2–4) in 16 playoff games.

New York Islanders (via 𝕏): The New York Islanders revealed eight options for their upcoming alternate jersey. There were 80,000 submissions. These are the eight they decided to move forward with, and the fans did not seem too thrilled with their choices in the 𝕏 replies.
From 80,000 to 8. 🤯
The 8 final Third Jersey concepts for the 2027-28 season are here and #IslesNation your time to vote starts tomorrow!

NHLTradeRumors.me: Patrik Laine was linked to five teams looking to boost their offense for a low price. Among the five, the Toronto Maple Leafs. TSN’s Frankie Corrado doesn’t see the fit, though, and said Laine’s one-dimensional game doesn’t help them fix their defensive mess.
Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche were well represented on the Hall of Fame tiers. Aarif Deen has the breakdown of where three current Avs skaters landed, as well as two former Colorado draft picks. All five players landed in different tiers.
TSN: The Vancouver Canucks signed Adam Novotny to a three-year entry-level contract yesterday. The Canucks picked the Czech forward with the 24th overall pick, and he had 65 points (34-31–65) in 58 games with Peterborough (OHL) last season.
Florida Hockey Now: The Ottawa Senators didn’t wave the white flag in the Brady Tkachuk trade, and they restocked by bringing in Will Eklund from San Jose. George Richards continues his Atlantic Division offseason grades with a look at Ottawa’s summer.
Detroit Hockey Now: The Utah Mammoth see what the Detroit Red Wings didn’t in 6-foot-6 goalie Sebastian Cossa. Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong made a draft-day trade, sending the Bruins’ first-round pick to Detroit, and later said that they are giving Cossa the opportunity to take the next step.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Justin Brazeau does not appear to have a roster spot in Pittsburgh this season. He may not be the only seven-figure salary in Wilkes-Barre this season. The Penguins brought in veterans to stay competitive, but that may get in the way of some younger players. Dan Kingerski offers some thoughts on where the Penguins stand after their offseason moves.
Daily Faceoff: There are still 18 restricted free agents unsigned (including Matt Poitras), and some big names remain on the board. The list has not changed recently, and Cutter Gauthier remains on top. Scott Maxwell of Daily Faceoff takes a look at the top five remaining RFAs.
