With DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. cemented as the top two wide receivers on the team, the Steelers are hoping someone grabs the chance to become the third wide receiver in the lineup. So far, it seems like that has been Roman Wilson.

The third-year player out of Michigan hasn’t flashed much in his NFL career, totaling just 166 receiving yards in two seasons. Last year, Wilson was largely a depth option as he and Aaron Rodgers never developed chemistry.

This year, though, Wilson appears to be earning more playing time during training camp, impressing both his teammates and new coaching staff. Rodgers explained that he thinks Wilson has taken a step forward early in the Summer.

“He looks to be more dynamic,” Rodgers said, via The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo. “He’s making plays. He’s confident. The personality starts to come out. He’s, you know, joking around more with you in the locker room. I just love it. I love to see guys really coming into their own and really feel like they can be comfortable being their full self.”

While Rodgers can compare Wilson’s play from last year and this year, the Steelers’ new coaching staff only has this year to judge. Thus far, offensive coordinator Brian Angelico said he likes what he has seen from Wilson.

“Him and Aaron seem like they’re on the same page, their communication and where he needs to be with the concepts,” Angelico said. “Rome has really worked hard in his preparation and film study. I think he’s playing a little bit more quieted, mind relaxed, and just going out, playing football rather than thinking.”

The Steelers wide receiver depth chart is a little thin after their top two targets, so Wilson stepping up would go a long way in filling out the lineup. Here’s where Wilson currently stands within the organization.

The Steelers list Wilson as a the WR3 on the depth chart, starting in the slot alongisde DK Metcalf and Michale Pittman Jr. Metcalf was the team’s best wide receiver last year, and Pittman is a veteran who was perhaps the biggest offseason addition in March.

Therefore, it’s notable that Wilson is highest among the depth options after the top two. Besides Wilson, Skowronek is a veteran who’s a known quantity with low upside, while Bernard is a talented rookie who has to earn his place in the NFL. Those two players will be Wilson’s biggest target competition during the season.

The rest of the depth chart is full of players fighting for the final one or two spots on the roster.
