FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team is about two months away from dropping the puck on their upcoming season.
Before then, though, some members of the squad decided to come down to Fargo and spread some cheer to kids in need of a pick-me-up.
Defenseman EJ Emery and incoming goalie Alex Scheiwiller hung out with patients staying in the children’s wing of Sanford’s main campus hospital on 23rd Avenue.
They signed autographs, helped color pictures, and generally had a great time in Cully’s Kids Cabin, an activity space created by the foundation of Moorhead hockey legend Matt Cullen.
Both players said that representing UND in this capacity made for a fulfilling experience.
“A lot of people look up to us on the hockey team, and the hockey team means a lot to a lot of people in this community and a lot of people around, so it’s super special,” said Emery.
“The biggest thing is just to make them smile, to have a lot of fun with them and brighten their days,” added Scheiwiller.
Emery was drafted 30th overall by the New York Rangers in 2024 and is currently rated as the 5th best prospect in their organization.
Scheiwiller is a new addition to the team this year as their projected third-string goalie. He’s fresh off a sparkling season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he won AJHL Goaltender of the Year and was named the AJHL playoff MVP after his Canmore Eagles won the title.
