There are 47 days until the Boston Bruins’ home opener.

However, the bookmakers aren’t too high on the black and gold this year. FanDuel, specifically, has the Bruins at the bottom of the East, with the longest shot to get to the playoffs, as well as to win the division, conference, and Stanley Cup.

We saw this last year, but I digress.

Elsewhere around the league, there have been some under-the-radar trade and free agency moves this summer, and Sportsnet has a roundup of the top 12. Hockey Canada issued a statement accepting an independent appeal board’s suspension recommendations for the five players involved in the 2018 World Juniors scandal. There’s also Kirill Marchenko talk, free agency grades, Red Wings’ UFA talk, and the Edmonton Oilers offseason.

And thanks, Chris.

Bad night to be a Red Sock

Happy Thursday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

SPORTSBOOKS: The books don’t buy the Bruins. FanDuel has the Bruins with the longest odds to win the Stanley Cup (+12500) in the Eastern Conference, and 28th in the NHL. Not all books are that down on the Bruins. The Boston-based DraftKings has worse odds for the Red Wings, but regardless, the consensus is that the B’s are near the bottom of the division.

The point totals for the major sportsbooks sit between 86.5 and 89.5. Last season, the Bruins were the top wildcard with 100 points, and the Senators were the second wildcard with 99.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: There are big moves, but some don’t catch everyone’s attention. Sportsnet’s David Morassutti lists 12 under-the-radar acquisitions that could make a bigger impact than the headlines they fetched this summer.

Sportsnet: In a release, Hockey Canada said it accepted an independent appeal board’s recommended continued suspensions from Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs for the five players acquitted in last year’s sexual assault trial.

Alex Formenton is eligible for immediate reinstatement. The other four will be eligible on November 10 of four different years, with Cal Foote in 2026, Carter Hart in 2027, Dillon Dube in 2028, and Michael McLeod in 2030.

NHLTradeRumors.me: Kirill Marchenko has been a hot topic this summer. At the draft, Kevin Weekes reported he was not going to extend in Columbus, and now Jeff Marek says it depends on one important factor. How good will the Blue Jackets be next season? With a bad season, the 26-year-old may end up forcing his way out.

Detroit Hockey Now: There have been 301 contracts signed since the July 1 window opened. Patrick Kane is the only Red Wings UFA to land a deal, while the other four (including JVR) are still looking.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Atlantic Division improved, but so did a good number of the teams in the Metropolitan. Dan Kingerski has grades for all eight Metro teams, including two A+’s, an A, and an F.

Philly Hockey Now: Snubbed? Travis Sanheim didn’t crack the list of top 20 defensemen for the second straight season. Will James writes about the “workhorse and anchor of the Flyers’ top pair” and holds his 2025-26 stats up next to Jackson Lacombe and Victor Hedman.

TSN: Babcock. That was the big move in Edmonton this summer, and the stars seem to be all in. They also made moves on the ice, including moving out Darnell Nurse and bringing in Milton native Ryan Shea. TSN recaps the Oilers’ offseason moves, including some of Babcock’s words on his new job.
