Welcome to the 8/14 edition of the PhHN Daily!
We’ve got plenty of Philadelphia Flyers content to talk about, including predictions, a loan, weighing risks, and a snub. Around the league, we have trade rumors, a rejected trade, odds, salary dumps, and more!
Let’s get right into it!
Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers have never had a Calder Trophy winner. In their long history, with many great rookies, none were able to bring home the award. This season might be their best chance. Porter Martone looked sharp in his first taste of NHL action. Now, he’s the early favorite to bring home the award. What does he need to do to win the Calder Trophy?
Jack Berglund was expected to have a chance to earn a roster spot on the Flyers this coming season. After a brief stint in the AHL at the end of last season, it looked like there was a chance he could make a run for a roster spot. Now, that chance is over. The Flyers have loaned him back to Farjestad BK for the entire next season.
More offer sheets? The Columbus Blue Jackets and Adam Fantilli remain apart on a new contract for the RFA. Should the Flyers swoop in and take a risk on another young potential 1C? We examine whether or not it’s worth the risk to offer sheet Adam Fantilli.
Travis Sanheim has been a legitimate top-pair defenseman for the Flyers for a while now. Over the past two seasons, he has earned respect on the international stage as well, making an impression for Canada at 4 Nations and the Olympics. However, he still remains off the Top-20 defenseman lists. Was Travis Sanheim snubbed?
NHL Trade Rumors & News
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Ottawa Senators released video from the war room on draft day during the 2026 NHL Draft. GM Steve Staios mentioned multiple trade scenarios that they could have pursued, but one that really intrigued him was a “roster player” from Pittsburgh. While the player was never named, Dan Kingerski used context clues to narrow down who it could have been.
Boston Hockey Now: The 2026-27 season is approaching, and the Boston Bruins are looking to make another crack at the postseason. However, oddsmakers don’t see things in their favor. Jack Studley breaks down where the oddsmakers have the Bruins this season.
Calgary Sun: The Calgary Flames have a stockpile of left-shot defensemen on the roster. Daniel Austin does not expect a large number of trades, but senses that a few moves could be made before the season begins. Could the Flames be moving a defender?
NHLTradeRumors.Me: The Flyers sort of put the Anaheim Ducks in a tough spot with the Leo Carlsson offer sheet, which led to the raised price tag for Cutter Gauthier. With the new bill coming for Gauthier, the Ducks are going to have to make some moves to make room for the new deal. Expect some salary dumps coming in Anaheim.
The Athletic ($): The Zach Werenski trade saga was an interesting one. First, he wanted a trade. A trade was agreed upon, but the player used his no-trade clause to remain in Columbus for the time being. He has since retracted his trade request and reiterated his desire to stay with the Blue Jackets. Now, he’s addressed the media about it all.
