Perhaps the greatest trophy in sports will be on display at Dunkin’ Park on Tuesday, Aug. 18, as the Stanley Cup makes its way to Hartford.
The Cup will be available for fans to take photos with from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s being brought to Hartford as part of a tour by the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The Stanley Cup is the oldest existing trophy awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America, as it’s given out to the NHL’s champion every year. It’s also the only trophy in the four major sports where the winners have their names engraved on the trophy itself.
Fans do not need tickets for this free event but donations will be accepted to benefit the Tunnel To Towers Foundation, which has been supporting military members, first responders, and their families since it was founded in the wake of 9/11.
Fans can enter the main gate on the corner of Trumbull Street and Main Street for a photo opportunity with the Cup.
The Yard Goats will face New York Yankees affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, later that night, at 7 p.m. at Dunkin’ Park.
“We’re thrilled that our community will have the opportunity to come take a photo with the iconic Stanley Cup at Dunkin Park,” Yard Goats President Tim Restall said in a release. “Thank you to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and former Whalers Equipment Manager Bob Gorman for making this happen for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Hartford is a special place, and the Yard Goats take great pride in continuing the tradition of professional sports in the capital city.”
The Yard Goats will continue a two-week homestand on Saturday against the Erie Seawolves at 6 p.m.
