Ice hockey: It’s so hot right now. Canada’s national winter sport is scoring big with film and TV audiences thanks to hit shows like Heated Rivalry. But while the HBO Max series may be introducing new fans to the so-called “boy aquarium,” Shane and Ilya aren’t the only characters taking the ice this year… or getting steamy off of it.

On the heels of Heated Rivalry is a slew of shows and movies — some currently available to watch and others coming soon — featuring lots of hockey pucks, sticks and hot hookups. Ahead of Heated Rivalry Season 2, check out this guide to all the hockey content that just so happens to be wrapped in romance.

Heated Rivalry

Based on the Game Changers book series by Rachel Reid, the first season of Heated Rivalry follows Shane (Hudson Williams), a talented hockey player on the Montreal Metros, and Ilya (Connor Storrie), a Russian athlete playing for the Boston Raiders. (Real hockey enthusiasts know these teams are fictional.)

Shane and Ilya’s sexy meet-cute in a hotel gym leads to illicit hookups, which they keep secret from the rest of the league. Their romance builds as they see each other on and off the ice and soon it’s clear that these two simply can’t stay away from each other, no matter the consequences.

The HBO Max series made instant stars out of Williams and Storrie, and Season 2 is on its way, with Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie portraying characters Harris Drover and Troy Barrett, who strike up a romance.

Off Campus

Off Campus, a Prime Video series based on Elle Kennedy’s books, follows the Briar University hockey team and the women its players fall for in between games. The first season focuses on Garrett (Belmont Cameli), the team’s star player and resident nepo baby, who claims he’s simply incapable of having a girlfriend. Of course, that changes when he meets brainy musician Hannah (Ella Bright). The two make a deal: She’ll tutor him if he fakes a relationship with her to make her crush jealous.

The fake dating scheme to attract Hannah’s crush is abandoned when she and Garrett realize they have actual feelings for each other. But as the traumas they both endured in the past bubble up, the two must find a way to let the other in.

There’s more romance for this hockey team on the way. Season 2 of Off Campus will center on the budding love story between Hannah’s best friend, Allie (Mika Abdalla), and Dean (Stephen Kalyn). Amazon has not announced a release date for the show’s sophomore season.

The Sticks

This upcoming Netflix original hockey drama from creator Nick Naveda is more Friday Night Lights than Heated Rivalry. It focuses on the community of South Dorothy, Minn., whose high school hockey team faces an unimaginable loss and is forced to come together.

It stars Michelle Monaghan of The White Lotus as grieving widow Harper Sullivan, who is tasked with coaching the team in the wake of the tragedy.

While Netflix says that the show is not based on any real events, The Sticks has received backlash from some of the family members of players on the Humboldt Broncos junior ice hockey team, who believe the show was inspired by the 2018 bus crash that killed 16 people, including 10 players.

“The Sticks is about a lot of things. Hockey, family, love, loss, class, and coming of all ages,” Naveda told Tudum. “But above all, it’s a story about community and the importance of taking care of one another. Seeing this terrific cast of actors bring their characters to life with such curiosity, empathy, and tenderness has been incredibly moving to watch, and I can’t wait for the world to meet the people of South Dorothy.”

The series has not yet set a release date.

Icebreaker

BookTok fans, rejoice: A Netflix adaptation of Hannah Grace’s Icebreaker is on its way. Hailing from Call Her Daddy podcaster Alex Cooper and her team at Unwell Productions, the series follows an aspiring Olympic figure skater forced to share the rink with an equally ambitious hockey player. What starts as a contentious relationship soon turns so hot and heavy, it just might melt the ice below their skates. Gossip Girl’s Amanda Lasher is slated to showrun the series.

Not much has been revealed about the show so far, but should it do well, there’s more romance to mine: Icebreaker is the first in Grace’s three-book Maple Hill series.

Fake Skating

Not all hockey romances are TV shows! A film adaptation of Lynn Painter’s 2025 novel Fake Skating, from the team behind Anyone But You and One Night Only, is currently in the works, with The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone on board to helm the project.

The YA film, which has yet to announce its cast, follows high school senior Dani, who moves back to her mom’s hometown and has a chilly reunion with Alec, the school’s star hockey player and her childhood sweetheart, who had unexpectedly stopped speaking to her. Soon, though, the two realize that entering into a fake relationship with one another comes with surprising perks, bringing them back together for a mutually beneficial scheme. But as their fake romance heats up, real feelings creep in.

Fake Skating will hit theaters in July 2027.
