Dmitry Orlov goes back with San Jose Sharks’ draft pick Alexander Karmanov.
“I met him back when I was still playing for Carolina,” Orlov recalled to Sport 24’s Dmitry Erykalov. “He used to come into our locker room. I look at him and think, ‘Kid, who are you?’ I thought maybe he was a basketball player.”
Karmanov — the Sharks’ recent 7-foot-1 seventh-round pick — would’ve been playing Triple-A hockey in Pennsylvania at the time.
“And he says, ‘I play hockey in America,’” Orlov shared. “‘Good for you,’ I said. Wished him luck. And it’s kind of funny that now, before the season, we’ll be at the same camp. We’ll see how it all works out for him.”
Karmanov should be at San Jose Sharks’ camp before returning to the North Bay Battalion for his second OHL season. He’s committed to Penn State University for the 2027-28 season.
In this far-ranging interview, Orlov also discussed the Shakir Mukhamadullin trade, Yaroslav Askarov, his thoughts on adding Darnell Nurse and Jacob Trouba, trying to get Artemi Panarin to come to San Jose, his respect for Macklin Celebrini, and how much he’s enjoying life in California. It’s really a terrific interview!
