No. 13 New York Islanders Select Malte Gustafsson, D, HV71Scouting Report
Guatafsson has put himself into the tier of the best defensemen in this draft. He’s 6-foot-4, over 200 pounds and knows his way around the sheet. Gustafsson is a solid defender, who plays with some physicality and is at his best when he’s got a bit of snarl to him. His skating is smooth and allows him to cover ground efficiently.
Gustafsson does not have a natural offensive touch, but he moves pucks effectively and his numbers were impacted by an HV71 lineup that didn’t have a lot to it at either the pro or U20 level. Gustafsson shined brightest in playing a mountain of minutes for Sweden’s gold-medal World U18 Team and that is the lasting impression.
