An Arizona State player was hospitalized after collapsing during an off-ice workout, the school said in a statement Sunday.
The name of the player was not disclosed. According to SunDevil Source, the player is a newcomer — which could mean freshman or transfer, and of which ASU has 18 of them — and is in critical condition.
“The university offers its support for the student-athlete, their family and all of our student-athletes during this difficult time,” Fiscus’ statement read.
The incident took place Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. at Sun Angel Stadium. Tempe Fire Medical Rescue went to the scene after receiving a 911 call reporting a “heat-related illness.” A patient was treated there and transported to a nearby hospital, according to the fire department, The Athletic reported.
The incident took place during a workout that was team sanctioned, though not necessarily with the coaching staff present.
