Reports suggest that his anger arised after he was being removed from the lineup during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs was frustrating, adding another layer to the uncertainty surrounding his future in Boston. According to Heavy, the blueliner featured in 73 total regular-season games for the Bruins during the 2025-26 campaign. He also averaged nearly 17 minutes of ice time per matchup. Nevertheless, head coach Marco Sturm opted to take Lohrei out of his lineup during the postseason.

Boston Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei has admitted that being removed from the lineup during the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs was frustrating, adding another layer to the uncertainty surrounding his future in Boston. As per reports, Lohrei has scored achieved 26 points while averaging 16:54 of ice time per game in 73 regular-season games during the 2025-26 campaign.However, his role diminished during the postseason. He played in the first three games of Boston’s first-round series against the Buffalo Sabres before being scratched for the final three games. Expressing his frustration, he added, “Obviously you’re pretty pissed off with that. I don’t know, you go into the beginning of the summer, and it’s still fresh, so it sucks,” the defenseman told the Boston Globe.Despite the frustrations, Lohrei claims that he is taking it very positively and is using the benching as motivation heading towards the new Boston Bruins season. “Eventually in the summer, I try and just flush everything,” continued the star. “I love to be on the ice in the summer. I love to be in the gym and just trying to better myself.”Lastly, he added, “And it doesn’t matter what happened the year before, whether it was the best year of your career or not great, or what happened the last three games. Just try and have fun doing what I love and just trying to improve myself.”According to reports, Lohrei is entering the final season of a two-year, $6.4 million contract that carries a $3.2 million annual cap hit. He is scheduled to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights after the 2026-27 season.Apart from this, Lohrei also became the most potential trade candidate. Earlier reports suggested that Boston had explored moving the young defenseman, while recent speculation continued to connect him with a possible departure.Though, he posted a plus-17 rating after finishing the previous season at minus- 43, the defenseman’s playing time dipped significantly during the most recent campaign. For now, Lohrei appears focused on earning his opportunities rather than dwelling on last season’s disappointment.But with the Bruins already having a crowded defensive lineup and Lohrei approaching a key point in his contract situation, it will become one of the more intriguing storylines of the 2026-27 season.
