Construction on Northeastern’s new multi-purpose arena has been delayed until “spring or summer” of 2029, according to an email obtained by The Huntington News. Originally, the facility, which will be the new home for Northeastern hockey, was to open in Fall of 2028.
As a result, Northeastern will be without a home arena for another three seasons instead of two. This upcoming season, Northeastern is playing “home” games at various other nearby venues.
Matthews Arena, the team’s home for over 100 years, was demolished in March to make way for new the arena.
Matthews, originally called Boston Arena, was opened in 1910. The original burned down in 1918 and a new one opened on the same spot in 1921.
During construction on the new facility, asbestos-containing material was found, the News said. Part of the reason for closing Matthews, along with its structural issues, was that asbestos and other toxins were found in the soil in 2024.
The arena was expected to cost $350 million, according to the plans that were approved.
