Former Maple Leafs winger Kasperi Kapanen has called out the fans and media in Toronto while comparing his experiences with the Leafs, and now, the Edmonton Oilers.
As the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers battle in their second straight Stanley Cup Final appearance, optimism is surging in both cities.
One unexpected standout for the Oilers during this playoff run has been former Maple Leafs winger Kasperi Kapanen.
Kapanen has stepped up significantly in the post-season, scoring an overtime winner and tallying 5 points in 8 playoff games – a notable uptick given that he recorded just 13 points in 57 regular season games this year.
Kapanen spoke about the challenges of playing in Canadian markets – especially Toronto – and offered his thoughts, as shared by Mark Masters on X:
“Media presence is big [in Toronto] & not always necessarily the best thing, but it does prepare you for the future. Coming to Edmonton, with it being in Canada, I was used to it. But I think you guys in Toronto, it’s still on another level.”
Kapanen, once a 20-goal scorer for the Leafs, was eventually traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins before finding a new home in St. Louis, and eventually, began a new chapter in Edmonton. After being placed on waivers earlier this season, he has since rejuvenated his career with the Oilers during their playoff run.
Toronto remains one of the most intense hockey markets in the world. While that spotlight may not suit every player, the Maple Leafs must prioritize acquiring those who not only embrace the pressure – but thrive under it.
