There’s a position to fill with the Montreal Canadiens.
An alternate captain spot is now open after the trade that sent 14-year NHL veteran Brendan Gallagher to the Vancouver Canucks.And Félix Séguin has one specific candidate in mind: Lane Hutson.
The play-by-play announcer, appearing on The Sick Podcast, had plenty of praise for the young defenseman’s work ethic, despite Hutson not being one of the most vocal players in the locker room.
According to Félix Séguin, Hutson leads by example. He’s always on the ice working to get better, and that has already made him a natural leader within the group.
The spot has been vacant since Gallagher’s departure. He wore an “A” last season before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks.
Many see Josh Anderson as the logical successor. The veteran already wore an “A” last season when Gallagher was a healthy scratch.
But I like Félix Séguin’s idea of giving it to Lane Hutson!

Josh Anderson remains a respected veteran in the locker room, and choosing him wouldn’t surprise anyone within the Canadiens organization.
But there’s also a strong case for Lane Hutson.
He’ll be tied to the Canadiens for the next eight seasons, and he already represents the values the organization wants to promote.
Even if Anderson or Jake Evans gets the “A” this season, many believe it would only be a matter of time before the young defenseman gets his turn.
The final decision will belong to Martin St-Louis and management, with training camp now only a few weeks away.
