Last month, the Vancouver Canucks promoted Adam Foote to the role of Head Coach, giving him his first job as a bench boss at the National Hockey League level after parts of three seasons as an assistant.
While the Vancouver Canucks’ roster is very familiar with Adam Foote, the newly-appointed Head Coach is hoping to get to know his group on a deeper level and that started last week where he met with a trio of the team’s top players.
Adam Foote opens up on key meeting with Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes & Thatcher Demko
Communication is key between coaches and players and for the Vancouver Canucks, having their top players on board with their new bench boss is extremely important if they want to have any success next season.
In a recent interview on Halford and Brough, Adam Foote revealed that he held a meeting with team captain Quinn Hughes, netminder Thatcher Demko and forward Elias Pettersson, who he’s confident will bounce back starting this fall.
Foote said that he went golfing with Hughes, Demko and Pettersson in Vancouver last week and that among the things they discussed during their meeting afterwards was the team’s leadership group needing to take accountability.
He added that he wants the leaders to connect better and for the group as a whole to work together each and every day and to hold their teammates accountable, but most importantly, supporting each other along the way.
The 2024-25 season was tough for the Vancouver Canucks as off-ice drama effected the dressing room and the team’s chemistry, with that carrying onto the ice too as some players struggled quite a bit.
Before those three met with Adam Foote, rumors were swirling about their respective futures in Vancouver, including including a report from The Fourth Period that said Thatcher Demko would be open to a change of scenery this summer. While that might be true, same with the rumors surrounding Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, the latter of whom Elliotte Friedman believes the team are “on the clock” with if they don’t turn things around and start winning.
For now, Hughes, Pettersson and Demko remain members of the Vancouver Canucks and that’s what Adam Foote will want, as those three are extremely important members of the organization on and off the ice and will all play big roles in helping the club potentially reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs next April.
