NEWTON, MA — Trailing 2-1 in the final minutes of regulation, freshman Ella Beach scored her first career goal to force overtime. No. 13 Maryland’s clash with No. 6 Duke went to a shootout, where goals from Ella Fehr, Maci Bradford, and Francisca Eschoyez gave the Terps a 3-2 win and their first 4-0 start to a season since 2022.

Two first-quarter goals from the Blue Devils (2-2) saw Maryland trail for the first time all season, but the Terps kept Duke off the board in the second quarter, while Eschoyez cut into the lead with her team-leading fourth goal of 2026. Eschoyez started Maryland’s scoring and capped the game with the win-sealing shot in the shootout.

Alyssa Klebasko was strong in the cage, making three key saves. She kept Duke off the board for the remainder of regulation, allowing Beach to score the equalizer in the 59th minute and force overtime.

Maryland outlasted Duke in the shootout to earn its 37th all-time win over the Blue Devils and 16th 4-0 start in program history. The Terps are back in action in College Park against Towson on Friday. 

How it Happened:

1st Quarter:


Klebasko made her first save in the third minute. 
Feliz Kuhne recorded the Terps’ first two shots in the sixth minute. 
Duke opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a goal
The Blue Devils extended their lead in the 14th minute and took a 2-0 advantage into the second quarter.

2nd Quarter:


Eschoyez (4) opened the frame with a quick goal to get Maryland on the board. Bradford (5) and Babs van Hest (5) assisted on the goal. 
Maryland fought off a Duke corner in the 22nd minute.
The Terps defended another corner in the final seconds and trailed 2-1 at halftime. 

3rd Quarter:


Klebasko made two saves and fought off two penalty corners in the 37th minute. 
A good look from Jordyn Hollamon forced a Duke save in the 44th minute. 
Maryland trailed by a goal after three quarters. 

4th Quarter:


Klebasko made another big save in the 47th minute.
An on-target shot from Eschoyez forced a Duke save in the 48th minute. 
The Blue Devils were assessed a yellow card in the 50th minute. 
Maryland was dealt a yellow card in the 56th minute.
Beach’s first career goal tied the game at 2-2 in the 59th minute.
Duke made two saves in the final seconds to force overtime.

Overtime:


Maryland took the period’s first penalty corner in the 62nd minute.
The Terps defended a Duke penalty corner in the 71st minute.
Sunday’s bout required a shootout.

Shootout:


Duke scored on its first attempt.
Fehr scored to even the shootout.
Duke missed its attempt.
Bradford scored on her attempt.
Duke amd Maryland both missed.
Eschoyez sealed the win with the shooutout-sealing goal.

Maryland is 4-0 for the first time since 2022 and the 16th time in program history.

During Missy Meharg‘s tenure, the Terrapins have been one of the nation’s most dangerous teams in overtime.
The Terps improved to 84-34 all-time in games that have gone to overtime or a shootout and 74-30 under Meharg.

Dominating Duke:


Sunday marked the 57th all-time meeting between Maryland and Duke in a series that dates back to 1985.
The Terps improved to 37-17-3 all-time against the Blue Devils.
