The Boston Bruins open the doors to Warrior Ice Arena at the end of this week. 

Rookie camp begins Friday, and the Bruins will be in Buffalo for a pair of games on Sunday and Monday. Training camp starts in nine days, and we know that the Bruins will be without Charlie McAvoy for the first six games, but when he comes back, the Bruins are planning on reducing his workload on the penalty kill. 

Elsewhere around the league, the NHL’s top 50 player rankings continued to roll out, with the NHL Network revealing Nos. 40-31. No Bruins made yesterday’s list. Ivan Demidov’s agent talked about his contract extension in Montreal, and there’s a Red Wing who still needs to be signed. Jonathan Huberdeau will not be at Flames training camp, and the Stars are looking to get Jason Robertson’s next contract done this season.

Boston Bruins

MCAVOY: Charlie McAvoy has been the Bruins’ top defenseman for years, and he’s involved in every area of the game. Last season, he saw an uptick in his penalty-kill usage, but Marco Sturm told The Boston Globe that he wants to tone that down this year. McAvoy averaged 2:48 of shorthanded ice time per game last season, which led the team.

NHL.com: The NHL continued its top 50 list, rolling out Nos. 40-31 yesterday. Three players from the Atlantic Division were listed, as well as the second goaltender on the list.  

Montreal Gazette: Ivan Demidov, who signed an 8x$9.15M extension this summer, left money on the table so the Canadiens can continue to build. His agent, Dan Milstein, said the deal would have looked different if he had his way, but Demidov wanted to get it done quickly and leave Montreal in a good spot. 

Detroit Hockey Now: It’s been a busy summer in Detroit. Amid the Dylan Larkin and Steve Yzerman news, the Red Wings still have to sign Simon Edvinsson. The price just went up, too, as the Canucks handed Zeev Buium an 8x$9.38M extension on Friday. 

Sportsnet: Jonathan Huberdeau will not be at Calgary Flames training camp. GM Craig Conroy initially said he had a setback in his skating, but followed up saying he used a “poor choice of words.” Huberdeau had hip resurfacing surgery in March, and there is no timetable for his return. 

NHLTradeRumors.me: The Dallas Stars signed Jason Robertson to a 1x$12M deal this summer. GM Jim Nill joined the NHL Network to talk about the negotiations and Robertson’s future in Dallas. The Stars are planning to get Robertson signed “this season sometime, before he comes to UFA.”

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils went two different directions with two recent first-round picks. They took 6-foot-7 defenseman Anton Silayev in 2024 and 6-foot-1 center Alexander Command this summer. James Nichols looks at both players and evaluates which one will be the better long-term fit in New Jersey.
