The Edmonton Oilers stepped into a wave of controversy Wednesday when they signed Alex Formenton to a one-year contract. Formenton was one of five players from Canada’s 2018 world junior team charged with sexual assault in connection with an encounter with a woman after a Hockey Canada gala in London, Ont. He was acquitted last year. Former The Athletic writer Daniel Nugent-Bowman says Formenton’s actions weren’t ‘a mistake.’
