The Philadelphia Flyers rookies hit the ice in Voorhees, New Jersey, at the Flyers Training Center on Monday for their 4th day of rookie camp and second practice session.

This comes following this past Friday’s opening practice session, then back-to-back rookie series games against the New York Rangers, which were swept by Philly.

On Monday, the rookies hit the ice once again for their second-to-last practice before main camp picks up on Thursday.

Everyone was in attendance on Monday with the exception of forwards Jett Luchanko and Denver Barkey, who both had maintenance days, per John Snowden. He expects both of them to be on the ice for Tuesday’s final practice.

Barkey only played in Sunday’s rookie series finale while Luchanko played in both.

Monday’s session lasted about an hour, primarily made up of 3-on-0 rush drills, followed by 5-on-2, and wrapped up with some small-area 3-on-3.

Given the short window of rookie camp and even training camp, players have been giving 100%, not taking a play off. That led to an intense practice with guys trying to make their best impressions.

Notes From Flyers Rookie Camp Day 4

Naturally, the guys with NHL time like Porter Martone, Alex Bump, Oliver Bonk, and Ty Murchison all dominated. Murchison especially stood out to me on Monday. The Arizona State product looked sound defensively, breaking up entries in the 5-on-2, but also getting involved offensively, netting a handful of goals.

The defensive group as a whole looked to be the far better position group on Monday. Aside from Murchison, Brek Liske’s offensive conrtributions stood out to me. Spencer Gill also made a handful of eye-catching plays with the puck on his stick.

This was the first time I got to watch Maksim Sokolovskii skate in person. First observation: wow, he is huge. Second: how on earth does he move so well for someone that big?

Aside from Martone and Bump, a handful of forwards did pop out to me. Noah Powell had a solid practice. He is someone who has never really produced points at a high clip in college or the OHL, but seemed to have a hot stick on Monday.

Nathan Quinn, as Phantoms head coach John Snowden said after practice, “lives on good ice in the offensive zone.” If he continues to do that, points will come. This will be a big year for his development. To me, he really is a draft steal from 2025.

My overall “MVP” from Monday’s practice is Murchison, who really did look like one of, if not the best player on the ice on Monday.

Rookie camp will wrap up on Tuesday with the final session beginning at 11:15 AM ET.
