The Boston Bruins are done with the Prospects Showcase, and now the attention turns to training camp.

James Hagens showed off in Buffalo yesterday afternoon. He scored all four goals in the Bruins’ 4-3 overtime win against the Sabres, capping off the Showcase with six goals in two games. The black and gold swept the two-game showcase, beating the Sabres by a combined score of 10-5.

Elsewhere around the league, today is the last day to sign players to eight-year contracts. The Ottawa Senators beat the bell, as did the Buffalo Sabres. Elliotte Friedman reported that the Senators are closing in on Drake Batherson, while the Sabres locked in Noah Ostlund. The Ducks are in contract talks with their top remaining RFA, and the Devils should be looking to beat the clock tonight.

The Islanders have a new captain, and the Canadiens extended their head coach. There’s also an RFA in Carolina who requested a trade after the season, and he’s still not signed.

Happy Tuesday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

PROSPECTS SHOWCASE: James Hagens impressed. HagensThe Bruins beat the Sabres yesterday, 4-3, to close out the 2026 Prospects Showcase. The Long Island native scored all four goals for the black and gold yesterday, beating Sabres’ goalie prospect Samuel Meloche with a wrist shot every time.

Hagens’ first three goals were on the power play, with the third being 5-on-3, and the OT winner was at 3-on-3.

He had two goals in the Bruins’ 6-2 win on Sunday.

Garden Level Podcast (video via YouTube): Bruins talk! I joined good friends Cam Stuart and Dan Conlon yesterday to kick off Season 2 of the Garden Level Podcast. We talked about the kid who scored six goals in Buffalo, other standouts, JJ Peterka, and talked through some lineup projections. (Our conversation started at the 28-minute mark, but they covered a lot of topics beforehand.)

The Bruins are announcing the training camp roster today. No PTOs are coming, per Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe. Don Sweeney and Marco Sturm will hold a press conference Wednesday afternoon. On-ice sessions begin Thursday at 10:00 AM.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Sportsnet: Late last night, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Ottawa Senators are nearing an eight-year deal with forward Drake Batherson. The AAV is $10.75M. The 28-year-old winger is coming off a 33-goal, 71-point season. In August, Bruce Garrioch reported that Batherson is looking for an eight-year deal before the CBA changes come into play.

The last day to sign a player to an eight-year deal is TODAY. Changes come into effect at midnight ET.

ESPN: Noah Ostlund is sticking around in Buffalo. Yesterday, the Sabres announced an eight-year, $52.8 million contract ($6.6M AAV) for the 22-year-old. During his rookie season, Ostlund finished with 27 points (11-16–27) in 60 regular-season games and had a goal and an assist in Buffalo’s Game 3 win in Boston.

TSN: The Anaheim Ducks and Cutter Gauthier are having “substantive talks” regarding his new contract. The Ducks just offloaded the last year of Chris Kreider’s contract, freeing up $6.5M in cap space. They now have $15,573,395 to work with.

Sounds like progress on the Cutter Gauthier contract front with Anaheim, substantive talks happening between both sides at the very least.

New York Islanders (via 𝕏): The New York Islanders named Bo Horvat the 16th captain in franchise history. Horvat, acquired from the Canucks in January 2023, has played 271 total games with the Islanders over the last four seasons. He replaces Anders Lee, who signed with Utah in July.

Bo Horvat has been named the 16th captain of the New York Islanders.

Sportsnet: The Canadiens have been busy signing and re-signing players over the last two days, but they found time to extend their head coach. Martin St. Louis is now under contract through the 2029-30 season. He has posted a 163-155-47 record through his first five seasons and has led the Canadiens to the playoffs twice.

Detroit Hockey Now: Cam Talbot, 39, is signing a one-year deal worth $950K with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Talbot went 12-9-6 last season with a 3.19 GAA and .883 SV%. It will be his ninth stop around the NHL, and he’s tied with Sean Burke for the second-most career teams among NHL goalies (Curtis Joseph, 11).

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils traded a pair of draft picks for Luke Evangelista at the start of September. Today is their last day to lock him down for eight years. Evangelista has one year left on his deal at $3M, and James Nichols dives into why he is a likely candidate to be signed before midnight.

Daily Faceoff: According to Pierre LeBrun, Alexander Nikishin requested a trade away from Carolina following their Stanley Cup run. The RFA wants a change of scenery, and the trade request is still in place.
