Don’t know if you heard, but there’s a guy in training camp with the Detroit Red Wings on a Professional Tryout Offer (PTO).

In fact, we can guarantee that he’s going to make the team.

“I’m on a PTO now, actually,” Simon Edvinsson explained about his current status with the club.

A restricted free agent, Edvinsson is without a contract. He doesn’t have to be in camp. Yet he wants to be here.

It was important to him that he be here.

“I don’t see the reason for me to sit at home, to be honest,” Edvinsson said. “We are going into a new season where it’s important that everybody is linked together.

“I don’t know the expression, but everybody needs to be on the same page. That was my reasoning to come over here.”

Edvinsson is only participating in drills. He doesn’t play in scrimmages.

Still, his mere presence is making an impression on his coach.

“I give that young man a lot of credit,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “He could be at home in Sweden, waiting and biding his time.

“But he came over, and he wanted to be with his teammates, and here he is. He’s involved.”

Edvinsson Left to Navigate Red Wings Chaos

Negotiations between Edvinsson’s camp and the Red Wings were delayed by the uncertainty of the team’s front office following the July dismissal of GM Steve Yzerman.

Pierre LeBrun: Re Simon Edvinsson/Red Wings: The new interim GM Shawn Horcoff wasted no time, I’m told he reached out to Edvinsson’s agent…to get the ball rolling; they’ve gotten going for real here – SC with Jay Onrait (9/16)

“It took a while, but now it’s finally someone here, and I’ve been talking to [interim GM Shawn] Horcoff, and we had a good conversation,” Edvinsson said. “So yeah, that’s where we are right now.”

Being around his teammates in a familiar environment is helping to keep Edvinsson’s mind off the ongoing negotiations over his new pact.

I think I would be stressed if I was back in Sweden now and I saw everybody else practicing,” Edvinsson said.

And yes, he has noticed the contracts being signed by other defensemen around the league.

“I would be lying if I said no,” Edvinsson said. “Of course, it’s been a lot of contracts.

“The cap is going up. Everybody’s trying to secure players, young players. I think that’s the way the league is going right now.”

Now, McLellan figures it’s time for the Red Wings to step up and make that Edvinsson gets paid.

“He’s not signed right now,” McLellan said. “That’s not his fault. We haven’t had a lot of ability in the organization to get all that stuff done.

“So give him credit. He’s come over, and now it’s time for our organization to work fast with him and fair.”
