Stars Jump Out to Early Lead

Dallas wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Arttu Hyry scored just 16 seconds into the game after Cameron Hughes found him for an easy tap-in.

Justin Carbonneau nearly answered immediately, but Poirier turned aside two quality chances during the opening minute.

The Blues took their first penalty just over eight minutes into the period when Aleksanteri Kaskimaki went to the box for hooking. St. Louis killed off the penalty, but Dallas earned another power play later in the period when Carbonneau was called for kneeing.

Jack Becker and Quinton Burns dropped the gloves as the opening period became more physical.

The Blues generated two shots after the penalty expired, but Poirier kept them off the scoreboard.

Dallas carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission while holding a 12-7 edge in shots.

Kaskimaki Ties the Game

The Blues generated more pressure in the second period and earned their first power play just over a minute into the frame when Kyle Capobianco was called for tripping.

Dallas killed the penalty, then received another man advantage when Ross Johnston was called for roughing. St. Louis once again killed off the penalty.

The Blues finally broke through with 6:30 remaining in the period.

Zach Dean created a 2-on-1 opportunity and fed Kaskimaki, who beat Poirier to tie the game at 1-1. The goal gave Kaskimaki the Blues’ lone goal of the night.

Dallas answered shortly after.

Becker picked up a loose puck and raced in alone before beating Binnington to restore the Stars’ lead. Dallas took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.

St. Louis earned another power play with one minute remaining when Capobianco was called for holding, but the Blues could not convert before the period ended.

Both teams recorded six shots in the second period.

Blues Unable to Complete Comeback

The Blues and Stars changed goaltenders to start the third period.

Georgi Romanov replaced Binnington for St. Louis, while Brandon Halverson entered for Dallas. Binnington finished his night with 16 saves on 18 shots, while Poirier stopped 11 of 12.

Dallas killed off the remaining portion of Capobianco’s penalty to begin the third.

The physical play quickly picked up again. Burns and Becker dropped the gloves for a second time, while Kyle Burroughs and Dylan Peterson also fought.

Michael Sgarbossa and Lukas Fischer each received two-minute penalties during the sequence, while Burroughs received another two minutes for cross-checking. The Blues received a power play but could not capitalize.

Dallas earned another opportunity with the man advantage with under seven minutes remaining when Johnston was called for slashing. St. Louis killed off the penalty and kept the game within one.

With under four minutes remaining, referee Morgan MacPhee left the game after taking a puck to the face.

The Blues pulled Romanov for an extra attacker with under two minutes remaining, but they could not find the tying goal.

Dallas held on for a 2-1 preseason victory.

The Blues outshot the Stars 12-10 in the third period. Romanov and Halverson each stopped every shot they faced.
