As the Toronto Maple Leafs wrapped up their four-game preseason slate on Wednesday, the team announced a number of roster moves, with one surprising player likely to make the opening roster.
Zack MacEwen surpassed expectations at the Maple Leafs’ training camp, pushing out players such as Steven Lorentz. In the Maple Leafs’ 6-1 home win over the Ottawa Senators, MacEwen had a standout performance and was a constant reminder of what the Maple Leafs want from their bottom six.
MacEwen played alongside Teddy Blueger and Brandon Duhaime on the team’s fourth line. The 30-year-old even contributed on the scoresheet, blowing open the game as the Prince Edward Island native tipped it in off a two-on-one with Easton Cowan. The rest of the contest was what the Maple Leafs had signed MacEwen for: he finished his checks and dropped the gloves with Senators prospect Hayden Hodgson.
